We understand that you may have some preconceptions about yoga and holistic studios and when thinking about starting something new, or going to a new place, you are bound to have some questions so we have done our best to answer some of the most frequently asked ones.
If something isn’t listed below or you’d like some more assistance don’t hesitate to email us at email@example.com or contact us by telephone on 01242 269439
I’M NEW TO YOGA. WHERE DO I START?
Start from where you are and as you are, an individual with different needs from everyone else in the class.
Don’t worry you are in safe hands. Yoga has been around for over 2000 years as a safe an effective way to build strength and flexibility in the body and to still and calm the mind through focusing on our breathe and movement.
All of our teachers are fully trained and insured and are dedicated and passionate about ongoing and continued learning.
All of our classes are mixed ability and our teachers are skilled at providing assistance and alternatives If you have never done any yoga before or are returning after a long time then we would recommend our fundamentals class or a slow flow class.
WHAT DO I WEAR AND BRING?
Whatever you feel comfortable in. You need to be able to easily move and stretch, so for some people that is baggy or loose-fitting clothes and for others it is stretchy leggings and a sports top.
It is also a good idea to bring a jumper or additional layer that you can remove as you get warm and can put on at the end of the class during relaxation as your body cools down.
Classes are barefoot and no shoes are allowed in the studio, but a pair of socks is nice for relaxation. We do provide house slippers if you don’t like the thought of not wearing any shoes to walk to the studio.
We provide all the equipment you will need for a class but if you have your own mat feel free to bring it with you.
DO YOU HAVE LOCKER AND CHANGING FACILITIES?
Yes, we do. Our locker room is unisex but we have large private changing and shower cubicles.
We provide body wash and hairdryers but you need to bring your own towel if you want to take a shower.
We have personal effects lockers that you can put your mobiles, wallet, keys etc in. However, we lock the changing room during class, so although we cannot take any responsibility for items left we think it is pretty secure.
I CAN’T EVEN TOUCH MY KNEES LET ALONE MY TOES CAN I REALLY DO YOGA?
Absolutely. Sure, there are lots of photos out there of super bendy like a pretzel type extreme yoga poses but that is not what yoga is all about.
We adopt a philosophy of ‘start from where you are’. We work on strength, balance, mobility and calm. Being super flexible is not necessary an advantage.
Most importantly yoga is non-competitive, which makes a change in this modern world. Everyone is working within their own range and challenging themselves from there so you cannot be doing better or worse than anyone else as we are all different and our bodies are all uniquely different.
ISN’T YOGA JUST FOR GIRLS?
Let’s be honest in the UK most classes are made up of 90% female, which is odd as yoga was originally a practice that was predominantly male. However, yoga is gaining popularity with men, thanks in part to a number of elite sportsmen that have publicly talked about its benefits.
We have men in all of our classes but we also have a Yoga for Guys class if that would suit you better.
BUT YOU DO WEIRD STUFF LIKE CHANTING.
No, we don’t. Some teachers might but they’ll let you know if they are going to do this and it is entirely optional. If it’s not for you, then zone out – we’ll not be offended.
Take what you want from your yoga class – it’s your practice and if there is anything you don’t like then don’t do it!
WHAT WILL YOGA ‘DO’ FOR ME?
Whilst in the West yoga is a physical practice it was actually designed to quiet the chitter chatter in our minds.
On a purely physical level, a regular yoga practice will bring about increased stamina, strength and flexibility. Yoga has also been shown to help with athletic performance.
By doing the physical practice and focusing on our breath we also get the stillness of mind that yoga was ultimately designed to do.
Research has shown that yoga has remarkable benefits in reducing stress and anxiety, helping us to live more in the present moment and to make more mindful choices.
Ultimately yoga will make you happier, healthier and fitter!
DO I NEED TO BOOK?
You don’t have to as we always keep some spaces for drop-ins but if you want to be guaranteed a spot then you can book in advance either through our App, which can be found on your App store – search for The Hive Cheltenham or through our website.
Please arrive for your class about 10 minutes before the scheduled start time to allow time to book in and get settled.
IS THERE A MINIMUM AGE?
For general classes the minimum age is 16. We do allow children aged 14 & 15 to attend a class, providing the teacher is ok with this, they must be accompanied by a guardian or with their guardian’s written permission.
WHAT PRICE ARE YOUR CLASSES?
We have a range of different pricing and membership options. Full details can be found on our Pricing page.
WHAT IF I CANNOT MAKE A CLASS I’M BOOKED IN FOR?
We understand that things happen but we would ask.
Class bookings can be cancelled up to 4 hours in advance only online. If you paid by using your Hive Card, your class will be credited back to your account. Refunds and credits can take up to five days.
For any cancellations made within 4 hours of the class start time we reserve the right not to refund or you. This is at the absolute discretion of the Head of Studio.
If you have not signed in by 5 minutes before the scheduled start time of the class, we may open up your space to allow drop ins. If the space is filled and we cannot accommodate you in class this will be treated as a late cancelation and your class will not be credited or refunded.
If you are on an unlimited membership and you late cancel or no-show 3 times over a month period, the option to book online will be withdrawn for a period of one month.
Please note that, if you arrive 5 minutes or more after the class has started, we will not be able to let you in.
I DON’T THINK YOGA FITS IN WITH MY RELIGION / I’M NOT RELIGIOUS.
Yoga isn’t a religion. We practice physical postures (asana) work in all classes and some breathing and meditation but it is non-dogmatic.
I DON’T WANT TO BE TOUCHED.
Then you won’t be. Hands on modifications are used to help you into a pose and keep you out of any harm. Personally, we prefer to help you get there yourself just using verbal and visual clues before using any hands-on help.
We have assist tokens and you can choose where you are at any point during the class by simply placing your token on YES PLEASE or NO THANKS. You can also change this throughout the class.
SHOULD I GET MY DOCTOR’S ADVICE BEFORE I START?
Definitely. We are not health care professionals so if you are in any doubt about your fitness to practice yoga then consult your doctor or practice nurse. Yoga is a form of exercise and as with any other exercise if you have any medical history that raises concerns over cardio exercise please consult your physician.
CAN I GO TO A CLASS IF I’M PREGNANT?
Yoga is excellent during pregnancy and after the birth. However, it is recommended that you do not practice in your first trimester. You can return to practice in your second and third trimesters, where yoga are both fantastic supports.
I’M A HANGRY PERSON. CAN I EAT BEFORE CLASS?
We generally do not recommend eating for two hours before your class as we do physical movement such as twisting, bending and stretching which can be really uncomfortable on a full stomach.
However, if you need to a small snack won’t hurt – maybe one of our protein balls would be just the ticket.
